That could also explain why the paletted colormap is recognized in one case and not the other. Many Switch Joy-Cons have been plagued by Joy-Con drift, in which the Switch will register slight movements even when you’re not touching the sticks. There’s also some potential long-term concern in regards to the Lite’s analog sticks. The Switch’s smaller d-pad and condensed layout is fine for more deliberate titles such as Fire Emblem: Three Houses and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, but players with large hands might find themselves cramping up during games that demand a lot of dexterity. The system’s more compact button layout felt especially crowded as I carefully attempted to clear the death-trap-laden courses of Celeste and Super Mario Maker 2 - there were even several times when my thumb knocked against the right analog stick when trying to push the face buttons. Maybe I just have huge thumbs, but as a fighting game fanatic spoiled by the excellent Hori D-Pad on my regular Switch, I find the tiny Control Pad to be disappointing. I fared better performing my usual combos in Mortal Kombat 11 thanks to the game’s more straightforward inputs, but I still struggled to move Sub-Zero around as precisely as I wanted. The d-pad is both one of my favorite things about the Switch Lite, and one of the things I find most frustrating. But I found it way too small for more intense titles that demand pinpoint precision, as I learned the hard way while struggling to do even the most basic special moves in the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection. The Lite’s d-pad was a worthy companion for navigating basic platformers such as Super Mario World and Mega Man 11, and held up well as I frantically dropped blocks in Tetris 99. It’s both one of my favorite things about the Switch Lite, and one of the things I find most frustrating. Of course, the biggest change to the Switch Lite’s inputs is the +Control Pad directional pad, which trades in the separate directional buttons on the left Joy-Con for the kind of proper d-pad you’d expect on a portable console. The Lite has the same gyroscope as its bigger brother, which allowed me to move the system around to steer in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and aim in Splatoon 2 with precision. The A, B, X and Y face buttons are less snappy but offer a softer, satisfyingly longer travel, while the ZL and ZR triggers feel like they have just a bit more give to them. The Switch Lite’s buttons feel a bit different than those of its bigger brother, and mostly in a good way. Still, I find the Lite to be a nearly perfect personal device in terms of size and comfort, whether I’m cozying up on the couch with it while watching TV or taking it out on my way to the bar. You won’t be connecting this system to a TV, and while you can technically connect wireless controllers to the Switch Lite for some tabletop multiplayer action, the system’s lack of a kickstand means you’ll have to buy a dedicated stand to make that feasible (take a look at our best Nintendo Switch Lite accessories list to find one). While the Switch Lite is explicitly designed to be a dedicated handheld, it’s hard not to miss the ability to, well, Switch. The Switch Lite even fits into most of my shorts pockets, though I probably wouldn’t throw it in there without a protective case. That’s something I’d never do on my old Switch, which already feels massive after a few days with the Lite. I felt far less conspicuous than usual when I whipped out the smaller Switch to play some SNES games on the subway, and found myself continuing to play it as I stood on the platform in between train transfers. The benefits of the Switch Lite’s smaller design really became apparent when I started using it on my daily commute. But the Switch Lite is a single, sturdy chunk of plastic, making it feel like a true handheld rather than a display with two controllers strapped to the sides of it. The OG Switch has a lot of moving parts with its detachable Joy-Cons and large tablet display, and you can feel everything wiggle a bit when you’re holding the system in handheld mode. The console’s matte finish adds some nice extra grip, and seems to be far less prone to fingerprints than the glossy, smudge-prone tablet on the standard model.ĭespite being the smaller, cheaper Switch, the Switch Lite feels more well made than its bigger brother. The Lite’s white buttons pop nicely in contrast to the system’s gorgeous color options - I’m especially fond of our turquoise model, but the system also looks great in yellow, gray and coral. Nintendo’s miniature Switch is one of the most comfortable and attractive handheld consoles I’ve ever touched, with a compact 8.2 x 3.6-inch design that feels more travel-friendly than the standard 9.4 x 4-inch Switch. I fell in love with the Switch Lite the moment I picked it up - it’s just that adorable. The aim of the Third Japan-PIF Summit Meeting, in our view, is to discuss direction of our further cooperation in the context of changing world and based on outcome of the Second Summit. In his message, Prime Minister Koizumi, putting "people" as a key factor for sustainable development, pointed out the importance of education and, as a country that experienced serious suffering from pollution during it process of economic growth in 60's and 70'S appealed for promotion of economic development and environmental conservation in harmony, which, I believe, is a must in the Pacific Islands Countries. Prime Minister Koizumi's message in this meeting has very significant implication to PIF member countries. The World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg, South Africa last year was an epoch-making opportunity to gather our wisdom to tackle with these challenges. In such a time, with recognition that the globalisation can not be reversed -indeed reversible trend-, we are really required to unite to confront issues such as poverty reduction and sustainable development. The globalisation has also evolved in terms of economy encouraged by factors including promotion of free trades, increasing mobility of human beings and capital across borders, and development of information and communication technologies and so on. We need to tackle with them with very firm commitments. These were symbolic incidents in globalised world, which made us recognise the significance of further co-operation to confront threats to our world. The most dramatic change to us is, I would say two tragic incidents, the September 11th simultaneous terrorist attacks in the US, and, in the region much closer to us, the Bali bombing attack which took on 12 October 2002. On the other hand, we see that the international community has drastically changed since the last Summit Meeting. We have prepared a report of all of these follow-up programs, which is included in hand-out, so please take a look at it. A number of projects, including "Pacific Intellectual Dialogue Missions", youth exchange programs, and business mission for promoting industries in PIF Islands Countries, have been implemented. I would like to say these outcomes were well-timed at the beginning of the new century.įor the last 3 years since then, our partnership has made steady progress. In addition, the "Miyazaki PALM Declaration" and "Statement of Environment in the Pacific", both adopted at the Second Summit Meeting, established comprehensive direction for our partnership covering a number of areas ranging from political and security issues, economy, and social dimensions. He also announced the "Miyazaki Initiative" to implement it. Japan, as the co-chair along with Fiji, will make an every effort for a successful PALM Summit Meeting.Īt the Second Summit Meeting held in Miyazaki, 2000, the then Prime Minister of Japan Mr Mori, the co-chair of the Meeting, launched the "Pacific Common Frontiers Initiative" whose key-words are "Youth", "Ocean", and "Future", and expressed his commitment to further active diplomatic relations with the Pacific Islands Countries. While many PIF member countries have already advised us of attendance by leaders of each government, let me take this opportunity to request your kind co-operation to ensure attendance by the head of the government level to the Summit Meeting once again. We will host the Third Japan-PIF Summit Meeting in Okinawa this coming May. Gerald Zackios, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Marshal, as well as all the distinguished delegates, Ambassadors stationed in Tokyo. First of all, I would like to extend a very cordial welcome to all guests, including Hon. On the occasion of the Preparatory Meeting for the 3rd Japan-PIF Summit Meeting, please allow me to say a few words of welcome on behalf of the Japanese Government. The action without the fun is not what you want, so I think audiences will really enjoy this one for that. You know Bruce is going to put that in, so we wanted to do that as well. That's what I think the audience will enjoy about it, everyone from Jared on down, wanted to have humor laced throughout. So, in the spirit of the Die Hard movies, we were kind of making some of the fun stuff up on the fly. When you shoot a movie like this on the fly, everybody's got to be down to contribute, and that's what it was, but we wanted to keep the fun in it, instead of just doing a formulaic action movie. Matthew Marsden and I were supposed to have this big fight, but we rethought it, and on the fly, we came up with this dialogue exchange that I think is one of the strongest scenes in the movie. Patrick Muldoon: On this, Matthew Mardsen, Jared, and Brandon Cox (our DP), Douglas Matthews, and everybody, we'd go to the bar at the hotel at the end of the day and be adjusting dialogue and scenes a lot. What was the experience like of working with the cast and crew, including director Jared Cohn, and your co-stars like Bruce Willis and Matthew Marsden? It's above sea-level water going downhill, and it's really hard to believe. So, it's a cool setup, and during filming, they actually opened the gates for us to show us what happens potentially if a dam broke, and we filmed it, so it's part of the movie. But the plot of the movie is that Bruce Willis' character is going to open the gates and take out these towns, and in actuality, it's just awesome power. Patrick Muldoon: Well, I don't think I've ever been privy to what the power of an actual dam is and what that means. Other than going through the pandemic, what really stood out to you about the making of Deadlock? That's what a lot of productions go through these days, unfortunately, but we got lucky and we went straight through. But, safety first, and luckily, there was no COVID shut down, because all it takes is one person to get it, and you have to shut down. Patrick Muldoon: Well, you get a cotton swab stuffed up your nose every day, everybody does, and that's just the way it is, and I think it's the way it's going to be for quite some time. When Deadlock got started, what was the experience like of having to coordinate around the effects of the pandemic? Because of COVID, we had a bunch of false starts. Patrick Muldoon: Well, we were supposed to shoot it in September, then October, then November, and we finally did it in February of 2021. How did the pandemic factor into the making of Deadlock? Anytime you get to work with an icon like that, you kind of pinch yourself, and I was elated to get the call for it. In preparation for Deadlock, because it's reminiscent of Die Hard, I watched all the Die Hard movies again. Patrick Muldoon: I got involved by getting a call from my manager saying, " Do you want to do a movie with Bruce Willis?" And I said, " Thank you manager, and thank you God!" It was weird that you get a call like that, and Bruce is one of the reasons I got into acting in the first place. Screen Rant: How did you become involved in Deadlock? We speak to Patrick Muldoon about the making of Deadlock, working with Bruce Willis and director Jared Cohn, and how the COVID-19 pandemic presented different challenges to the making of the movie. To see which Bruce Willis movie makes the final cut, the Razzies will be airing on March 26, the day before the Oscars.RELATED: Every Similarity Between Girl In The Spider's Web & Bruce Willis' Mercury Rising With the tagline “Own your bad,” receiving a Razzie is a definitive, albeit humorous, career fail. Narcosis is a survival horror adventure set on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Like Lethe, Narcosis is an undeniably “indie” game, albeit a very polished and impressive one. But it also, in a weird way, reminded me a bit of an underwater version of the even more recent Lethe: Episode One. Obviously comparisons are going to be drawn between the two. Silly question number three: is this a bit like SOMA? Yes. It’s also quite short (under five hours) and reasonably “linear” in its structure, so that might be reason enough for some of you to avoid it. It also has a fair bit of combat, some puzzles to solve, and some mildly challenging platforming elements so…I’d call it more of a full-blooded stealth-horror/action-adventure game myself, if a slightly slow-moving one. Does that still qualify it as a “walking simulator”? You tell me. Silly question number two: is this a “walking simulator”? Kind of. Not the scariest game you’ll ever play, but definitely one of the most atmospheric. Perhaps more of a psychological one than what we normally slap with the tag, but horror nonetheless. Most of the time WASD will be more than enough to keep you on the move, reserving the mouse to just look around occasionally.) Silly question number one: is this a “horror” game? Yes, it’s a horror game. (Further word to the unwise: don’t go spinning that mouse every which way. And besides, the tutorial is thorough enough to get you accustomed in no time. It’s all perfectly apt, though, once you realise your character is encased in a bulky undersea exoskeleton (or, in the words of the narrator himself, a “walking coffin”). The first thing you’ll notice about Narcosis – aside from the gorgeous graphics and insanely immersive/claustrophobic atmosphere (even without VR) – is how challenging the controls are at first. Abyssal Ambience: A haunting soundtrack includes a closing theme from celebrated composer Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill series) Terror Verite: Primal fears - darkness, confinement and isolation - take on new levels of immersion when experienced in VR. Beyond Good and Evil: No shadowy organizations or eldritch terrors, only primal fears and human limits. Phantom Narrative: The survivor’s account unfolds in inexplicable ways alongside the player’s journey. Hostile Waters: A knife, flashlight and flares are essential to surviving the nightmarish flora and fauna of the abyss. Pressure Kills: High-stress situations accelerate oxygen intake, distorting sight, sound, space and time.
